“EVOLUTION.
e.l.f. enters haircare. Adanola passes £100m and strengthens its leadership team. The What Supp Co moves from bootstrapped startup to national Boots distribution. Shopify updates its platform for a future where AI agents can shop on behalf of consumers.
The businesses that survive rarely stay exactly as they started. They enter new categories, build new capabilities, expand distribution or adapt to changing consumer behaviour. What's interesting is that none of this week's stories are about dramatic pivots. They're examples of businesses building on existing strengths.
e.l.f. isn't becoming a different company. It's taking the trust it has built in beauty and extending it into haircare. Shopify isn't reinventing commerce. It's preparing for how commerce may evolve. Growth often looks less like reinvention and more like adaptation.
The brands that win aren't always the first to spot change. They're the fastest to evolve with it.

Strong economics create options
Sometimes the most valuable capital is the capital you never need to raise.
The What Supp Co's journey into Boots caught my eye this week. In a startup ecosystem obsessed with fundraising, it's refreshing to see a different story.
Kelly Gilbert reportedly self-funded the business with around £150k, built an 81% DTC contribution margin and secured distribution in more than 100 Boots stores within 18 months. The lesson isn't simply that bootstrapping works. It's that strong economics create options.
The Numbers.
Self-funded ~£150k No outside capital raised. | DTC contribution margin 81% The economics that bought the brand options. | Boots stores 100+ National distribution via the Ignite programme. | Time to retail 18 months From launch to a national listing. |

High margins gave the business room to invest, test and grow without relying on outside capital. Too often founders view fundraising as the solution to growth. In reality, sustainable growth is often the result of getting the fundamentals right first.
Margin discipline doesn't just improve profitability. It buys time, flexibility and negotiating power. Sometimes the most valuable capital is the capital you never need to raise. Cosmetics Business →
